Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery by Using Frayer Model for Senior High School Students

Abstract

Frayer model or often called as a diagram Frayer is a very useful tool for building and mastering vocabulary that is designed specifically for teaching and learning vocabulary. Thus, frayer model is about the use of diagram which is divided into four sections and a circle in the center. The circle in the center is written with the word going to be discussed while the four sections are written with the definitions, characteristics, examples of the vocabulary being learned and also the sentences where the word can be put in. Furthermore, the use of Frayer model is expected to be able to solve the problems often found by the students, including: (1) the difficulty to find and state the meaning of word they are learning, (2) the use of the same word for several times, (3) the error in defining the the word based on the context, and (4) the difficulty to remember the word. Finally, by using frayer model continually, their vocabulary mastery can be improved, especially for Senior High School students.

Frayer model atau yang sering disebut dengan frayer diagram adalah alat yang sangat berguna untuk pengembangan dan penguasaan kosakata dan memang didesain khusus untuk pembelajaran kosakata. Dalam frayer model terdapat penggunaan diagram yang didalamnya terdapat empat bagian. Bagian-bagian tersebut kemudian diisi dengan empat jenis informasi tentang kosakata yang dipelajari, yaitu definisi, ciri-ciri dan contoh dari kosakata serta kalimat yang didalamnya terdapat kosakata tersebut. Kemudian, penggunaan frayer model ini diharapkan dapat menyelesaikan masalah-masalah yang dialami siswa dalam pembelajaran kosakata termasuk: (1) kesulitan untuk menemukan dan mengungkapkan makna dari kosakata, (2) penggunaan kata yang sama terlalu sering, (3) kesalahan dalam mendefinisikan kosakata sesuai konteks, dan (4) kesulitan dalam mengingat kosakata. Dan selanjutnya, penguasaan kosakata siswa akan mengalami peningkatan, khususnya untuk siswa tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas.
