An Evaluation of A Teaching Material Entitled “English Learning Material for Creative Students” Used at Junior High Schools in Padang

Abstract

The research was an evaluative research done in order to find out the quality of an English teaching material entitled English Learning Material for Creative Students. The teaching material being evaluated was a workbook intended for grade 7 semester 2. This teaching material is an obliged book used widely in all junior high schools in Padang. This fact was the bottom line reason why the researcher conducted the evaluative research toward this teaching material. The design of the research was an evaluative research. The research instrument was an evaluation format consisting of several indicators. The categories being evaluated were design, instruction, language, activity, content, and variety of learning resource. After the evaluation had been conducted, it was found that the quality of this teaching material was still weak. Among the six categories being evaluated, only language and content categories had adequate quality, while the quality of design, instruction, and activity categories were weak. Also, the quality of variety of learning resource was totally lacking. This result proves that this teaching material cannot be used in teaching and learning process, unless there is an overall revision done toward it.

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian evaluatif yang dilakukan untuk mengetahui kualitas materi ajar Bahasa Inggris berjudul English Learning Material for Creative Students. Materi ajar yang dievaluasi dalam penelitian ini adalah LKS yang diperuntukkan bagi siswa kelas 7 semester 2. LKS ini merupakan LKS wajib yang digunakan secara luas oleh SMP yang ada di Kota Padang. Fakta inilah yang menjadi alasan kuat peneliti melakukan penelitian evaluasi terhadap materi ajar ini. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian evaluasi. Instrumen penelitian adalah tabel evaluasi yang berisi indikator evaluasi. Kategori yang dievaluasi adalah desain, instruksi, bahasa, aktivitas, isi, serta variasi sumber ajar. Setelah evaluasi dilakukan, ditemukan bahwa kualitas materi ajar ini masih lemah. Dari enam kategori yang dievaluasi, hanya kategori bahasa dan isi yang mempunyai kualitas cukup baik, sedangkan kategori desain, instruksi, dan aktivititas masih lemah. Adapun kualitas variasi sumber ajar masih sangat kurang. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa LKS ini tidak layak digunakan untuk proses pembelajaran, kecuali jika diadakan revisi menyeruluh terhadap LKS ini.

Cohesive Devices in Discussion Text Written by The Students of SMAN 12 Padang

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk melihat penggunaan cohesive devices dalam discussion text yang ditulis oleh siswa SMAN 12 Padang. Cohesive devices terdiri dari tiga jenis yaitu transitional signals, repetition of key words, dan pronouns. Data dalam penelitian ini diperoleh dari 20 lembar discussion text secara random dengan menggunakan tes tertulis oleh siswa kelas XI SMAN 12 Padang. Dari 20 data tersebut terdapat 29 transitional signal yang digunakan secara tepat dan 35 yang lainnya tidak tepat. Untuk penggunaan repetition of key words/nouns, ada 35 kata/kata benda yang sudah digunakan secara tepat dan 36 lainnya tidak tepat. Kemudian, untuk penggunaan pronouns ada 44 pronouns yang digunakan secara tepat dan 21 lainnya tidak tepat. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian tersebut, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan tidak adanya cohesive devices yang tepat penggunaannya dalam discussion text yang dibuat oleh siswa karena penggunaan fungsi dari cohesive devices-nya tidak sesuai.

Written Corrective Feedback Given by Teachers of MtsN Durian Tarung Padang on Students’ Grammatical Errors

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of written corrective feedback used by English teachers of a junior high school on student’s grammatical errors , and problems related to written corrective feedback on grammatical errors from the teacher’s perspectives. This is a descriptive research in which the population was all of English teacher of MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. By using maximal variation sampling technique, all of the teachers, who were five teachers, were chosen to be the sample. The first instrument used was documents which were notebooks and exercise books of the students of the school in the year 2015/2016, and the second instrument was interview with the teachers. From the research, it was found that only three types of the five types were practiced by the teachers. They were, consecutively written from the most frequently used to the least, direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback and metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. In addition, problems related to written CF were repetition of errors, students proficiency, student’s attitude, time-consuming, ineffectiveness of existing error feedback practice, and readability of students writing. Therefore, English teacher, future teachers should enrich their knowledge of written corrective feedback, optimizing their correction to optimize the benefits to the students language development and find solution to solve problem related to written corrective on students’ grammatical error.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe koreksi tertulis yang digunakan guru Bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) pada kesalahan-kesalahan grammar siswa dan masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis dari sudut pandang guru. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dimana populasinya adalah seluruh guru Bahasa Inggris MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. Dengan menggunakan maximal variation sampling technique, seluruh guru tersebut, lima orang, dipilih menjadi sampel. Instrumen pertama yang digunakan adalah dokumen berupa buku-buku catatan dan latihan Bahasa Inggris siswa ditahun ajaran 2015/2016, dan nstrument kedua adalah wawancara dengan kelima guru tersebut. Dari penelitian ditemukan bahwa hanya 3 tipe koreksi tertulis yang digunakan para guru, diurutkan dari yang terbanyak digunakan yaitu direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback dan metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. Masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis pada kesalahan grammar siswa antara lain pengulangan kesalahan, kemampuan bahasa siswa, sikap siswa terhadap koreksi, penyediaan waktu, ketidakefektifan koreksi yang telah ada, tulisan siswa yang sulit terbaca. Dengan membaca hasil penelitian ini, diharapkan para guru dan calon guru memperkaya wawasan dan pengetahuan mereka akan pengetahuan tentang koreksi tertulis, mengefektifan koreksi untuk memaksimalkan manfaat koreksi untuk kemajuan siswa dan mencari solusi dan penanganan untuk masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis untuk kesalahan grammar.
