Written Corrective Feedback Given by Teachers of MtsN Durian Tarung Padang on Students’ Grammatical Errors

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of written corrective feedback used by English teachers of a junior high school on student’s grammatical errors , and problems related to written corrective feedback on grammatical errors from the teacher’s perspectives. This is a descriptive research in which the population was all of English teacher of MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. By using maximal variation sampling technique, all of the teachers, who were five teachers, were chosen to be the sample. The first instrument used was documents which were notebooks and exercise books of the students of the school in the year 2015/2016, and the second instrument was interview with the teachers. From the research, it was found that only three types of the five types were practiced by the teachers. They were, consecutively written from the most frequently used to the least, direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback and metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. In addition, problems related to written CF were repetition of errors, students proficiency, student’s attitude, time-consuming, ineffectiveness of existing error feedback practice, and readability of students writing. Therefore, English teacher, future teachers should enrich their knowledge of written corrective feedback, optimizing their correction to optimize the benefits to the students language development and find solution to solve problem related to written corrective on students’ grammatical error.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tipe-tipe koreksi tertulis yang digunakan guru Bahasa Inggris di sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) pada kesalahan-kesalahan grammar siswa dan masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis dari sudut pandang guru. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dimana populasinya adalah seluruh guru Bahasa Inggris MTsN Durian Tarung Padang. Dengan menggunakan maximal variation sampling technique, seluruh guru tersebut, lima orang, dipilih menjadi sampel. Instrumen pertama yang digunakan adalah dokumen berupa buku-buku catatan dan latihan Bahasa Inggris siswa ditahun ajaran 2015/2016, dan nstrument kedua adalah wawancara dengan kelima guru tersebut. Dari penelitian ditemukan bahwa hanya 3 tipe koreksi tertulis yang digunakan para guru, diurutkan dari yang terbanyak digunakan yaitu direct corrective feedback, indirect corrective feedback dan metalinguistic feedback with the use of error codes. Masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis pada kesalahan grammar siswa antara lain pengulangan kesalahan, kemampuan bahasa siswa, sikap siswa terhadap koreksi, penyediaan waktu, ketidakefektifan koreksi yang telah ada, tulisan siswa yang sulit terbaca. Dengan membaca hasil penelitian ini, diharapkan para guru dan calon guru memperkaya wawasan dan pengetahuan mereka akan pengetahuan tentang koreksi tertulis, mengefektifan koreksi untuk memaksimalkan manfaat koreksi untuk kemajuan siswa dan mencari solusi dan penanganan untuk masalah-masalah seputar koreksi tertulis untuk kesalahan grammar.

A Study of Sentence Types on The Writing of English Department Students of Universitas Negeri Padang in Academic Year 2014

Abstract

In general, the students of English Department have the ability to write English well. However, there are still some aspects that must be considered in writing. Therefore, this study aimed to look at the extent to which students use the sentences types in writing an essay. Another aim was to analyze the problems occurred in using the sentences types. This research was a descriptive study with research subjects were 22 essays of Education 2 Class students in year 2014/2015. Data were collected by analyzing sentences in the essay which were the result of semester exam of a writing class. Based on the research, there were four sentences types in the students’ writing: simple, compound, complex, and compound complex sentences. Based on the results of the study, it was found that simple sentence was the most sentence types commonly written by the students in writing, by contrast, compound-complex sentence was the least sentence types written by the student. In addition, there were two problems that occurred to write the sentence types, ie run-on and fragment. Both of these problems were found in all parts of the essay: introduction, main body and conclusion. By doing so, it is expected to the lecturers to pay more attention to the use of different sentence types in students’ writing.

Secara umum mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris memiliki kemampuan menulis yang cukup baik. Namun, masih terdapat beberapa aspek dalam menulis yang harus diperhatikan. Oleh sebab itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat sejauh mana mahasiswa menggunakan jenis-jenis kalimat dalam menulis sebuah esai. Tujuan lainnya yaitu untuk mengetahui apa-apa saja permasalahan yang muncul dalam menggunakan tipe-tipe kalimat tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan subjek penelitian yaitu 22 esai mahasiswa kelas Kependidikan 2 tahun ajar 2014/2015. Data dikumpulkan dengan menganalisis kalimat-kalimat pada esai yang merupakan hasil ujian semester pada salah satu writing class. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, terdapat empat jenis kalimat dalam tulisan mahasiswa yaitu simple, compound, complex, dan compound-complex sentence. Dari hasil penelitian tersebut ditemukan bahwa simple sentence merupakan jenis kalimat yang paling sering digunakan oleh mahasiswa dalam menulis, sebaliknya, compound-complex sentence merupakan jenis kalimat yang paling sedikit digunakan mahasiswa. Selain itu, terdapat dua permasalahan yang muncul untuk menulis jenis kalimat tersebut, yaitu run-on dan fragment. Kedua permasalahan ini ditemukan pada semua bagian esai yaitu introduction, main body, dan conclusion. Dengan begitu, diharapkan kepada dosen untuk lebih memperhatikan penggunaan jenis kalimat pada tulisan mahasiswa.

Types of Questions Asked by English Teachers in Teaching and Learning Process at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang

Abstract

The purposes of this research are (1) To describe types of questions asked by teachers in teaching and learning process, (2) To know what language used by teachers in teaching English. This research is descriptive research. Object from this research are two English teachers at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang. The data collection used two instruments are audio recording and note taking. The data from this research are questions asked by teacher based on suggested by Wanjryb (1992). From this research, researcher found that open ended questions are mostly occur in the classroom beside ; yes/no questions, short answer questions, display questions, referential questions and non retrieval questions. During research, there are three kind of languages that used by teachers are English, mixed English –Indonesian, and Indonesian.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) mendeskripsikan tipe pertanyaan guru dalam kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas, (2) mengetahui bahasa yang digunakan guru dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar di SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP Padang. Data dikumpulkan melalui dua instrumen yaitu audio recording, dan note taking. Data yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini berupa pertanyaan-pertanyaan guru selama proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas.Data tersebut berdasarkan tipe pertanyaan yang di saranakan oleh Wanjryb (1992). Dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa para guru lebih sering menggunakan open ended questions daripada lima tipe pertanyaan yang lain yaitu; yes/no questions, short answer questions, display questions, referential questions and non retrieval questions. Faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan guru lebih sering menggunakan open ended questions daripada tipe pertanyaan yang lain karena kurangnya respon siswa saat pertanyaan itu digunakan dan singkatnya jam pelajaran bahasa Inggris yang tidak sebanding dengan banyaknya materi yang harus diberikan. Selama penelitian berlangsung, terdapat berbagai jenis bahasa yang di gunakan guru bahasa Inggris di dalam proses belajar mengajar yaitu English, mixed English –Indonesian, dan Indonesian.
